Why won't my engine start?

Bad starters are often the cause of no-start. A classic symptom of starter failure is that you turn the key and then only get a clicking sound. And if your engine won't start but your dash lights come on, then you've got another reason to suspect starter trouble.

Problems with the battery/charging system are also often to blame for no-start. A brand new battery should work reliably for at least three years, if not substantially longer. But if your battery dies at an earlier age and not because of a clear cause such as leaving your headlights on, then you could have a failing alternator. Other symptoms of alternator trouble include flickering/dimming headlights and problems with electrical accessories like your radio and power seats.

Fuel-related issues are another common reason that cars won't start. A clogged fuel filter can prevent sufficient fuel from reaching the engine to get it to fire up. This is one of the reasons that it's important to replace your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. Dirty fuel injectors can also cause no-start. Using a fuel additive can be helpful with cleaning injectors and intake valves. And if your fuel pump isn't working properly, then gas may not travel successfully from the tank to the engine. Signs of a fuel pump issue include sputtering, worsening gas mileage, and loss of power.
